8 Celebrities Whose Faith Plays a Major Role in Their Lives

Fame and faith don’t always seem like natural companions. The entertainment industry has a reputation for excess, reinvention, and a general indifference to tradition. But a number of high-profile celebrities have made their religious beliefs central to who they are, not just privately but publicly.

These aren’t passing moments of gratitude at award shows. For these eight people, faith shapes daily decisions, career choices, and how they talk about everything from hardship to success.

1. Denzel Washington

Few actors in Hollywood have been as openly and consistently devout as Denzel Washington. He has been a member of the Church of God in Christ for decades, a denomination his father served as a pastor for sixty years, and in December 2024 he was baptized and received his minister’s license at Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in New York City, just before his 70th birthday.

Washington has said plainly that he believes God has protected him throughout his career and that every role he takes involves some level of spiritual discernment. His commencement speech at Dillard University, where he told the graduates to “put God first in everything you do,” wasn’t a PR moment. It was the continuation of something he has said, in various forms, his entire adult life.

2. Justin Bieber

Bieber’s connection to Hillsong Church and later to Churchome, the congregation led by Pastor Judah Smith, has been well documented. After a period of very public personal chaos in the early 2010s, he spoke openly about faith being the thing that steadied him.

His 2020 album Changes and documentary series both returned repeatedly to the role Christianity played in his marriage to Hailey Baldwin and his recovery from what he described as depression and burnout. Whether or not people agree with his theology, the commitment appears genuine.

3. Carrie Underwood

Underwood has never treated faith as a background detail. Her 2021 album My Savior was a full gospel record, not a crossover experiment but an album she said she had wanted to make for years.

She grew up in a small Oklahoma church, and that upbringing surfaces in interviews constantly. When she spoke about three miscarriages before the birth of her second son, she was direct about how prayer helped her process the grief. Her faith isn’t decorative.

4. Chris Pratt

Pratt has become one of the more prominent Christian voices in mainstream Hollywood, something that has drawn both support and criticism. He attends Zoe Church in Los Angeles and has spoken at length about how becoming a father and facing early professional rejection led him toward a serious religious conversion.

His 2018 MTV Generation Award speech, where he listed “rules” that included “God is real” and “soul is real,” generated significant debate. He has not backed away from any of it.

5. Mark Wahlberg

Wahlberg begins every morning with prayer. That’s not a figure of speech. He has said in multiple interviews that his day starts before 3 a.m. and that prayer is the first thing he does, before workouts, business, or anything else.

Given his past, which includes a well-documented violent incident in his youth and a criminal record, the Catholic faith he eventually embraced reads as a genuine transformation rather than image management. He petitioned the state of Massachusetts for a formal pardon, citing his faith and the person he believes he has become, though that application was ultimately dropped.

6. Lecrae

The Grammy-winning rapper has built an entire career on Christian hip-hop, which took him from gospel audiences to mainstream recognition. His 2014 album Anomaly debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making history as the first album ever to simultaneously top both the Billboard 200 and the Gospel Albums chart.

Lecrae has also been candid about wrestling with his faith after experiencing church hurt and racial trauma, particularly in the aftermath of the 2016 political climate. His honesty about doubt makes his belief more credible, not less.

7. Chance the Rapper

Chance’s 2016 mixtape Coloring Book was saturated with gospel influences and won the Grammy for Best Rap Album. He has been open about his Christian faith throughout his career and has connected it directly to his work in Chicago, including significant charitable giving to public schools.

He married Kirsten Corley in a ceremony in 2019 that was deeply Christian in character, featuring gospel performances from Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, and Hezekiah Walker, and has described fatherhood in explicitly spiritual terms. His faith shows up in the work itself, not just in interviews.

8. Patricia Heaton

Heaton is one of the more outspoken Catholic voices in Hollywood, which has occasionally cost her professionally. She has been publicly pro-life and has spoken about attending Mass regularly. The Everybody Loves Raymond star has said that her faith informed how she approached her career, including the types of roles she was willing to take.

In an industry where that kind of public religious conviction can limit opportunities, she has maintained the position for decades without softening it for broader appeal.

9. Tim Tebow

Tebow’s faith has followed him from college football to the NFL, to professional baseball, and into broadcasting. He famously wrote Bible verses on his eye black during games at Florida, and the phrase “Tebowing,” kneeling in prayer on the field, entered the cultural vocabulary during his NFL stint.

Long after his playing career wound down, he continued speaking publicly about faith through his foundation, which works on issues including anti-human trafficking. Whatever one thinks of his sports career, his religious conviction has remained the constant through all of it.
