Social media has permanently changed celebrity culture. One bad tweet, one tone-deaf interview, or one resurfaced video can unravel years of carefully built fame in just a few short hours for any working celebrity today.
These stars had massive followings, thriving careers, and powerful personal brands built over many long years of hard work. Their stories prove that in the digital age, nothing truly disappears no matter what you do.
Kanye West lost his billion-dollar empire overnight

In October 2022, Kanye West made a series of antisemitic public comments on social media and in live televised interviews. Adidas ended their nearly decade-long Yeezy sneaker partnership and immediately stopped all payments to him.
Balenciaga, CAA, and Gap also all cut ties with him within just days of each other. Forbes reported his net worth dropped to around $400 million from billionaire status. Every statement he made was preserved.
Logan Paul filmed the unthinkable in Japan

In late 2017, Logan Paul posted a video from Japan’s Aokigahara forest that showed a deceased person hanging close up. That clip gained over six million views before he finally took it down from YouTube.

Ellen DeGeneres lost her “Be Kind” brand

In July 2020, BuzzFeed News published very serious allegations from current and former employees of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. They described racist microaggressions, sexual misconduct by producers, and a widespread culture of fear and bullying.
DeGeneres apologized to her staff and three executive producers were fired after a formal internal investigation was completed fully. The show ended in May 2022 after running for 19 seasons. Her be kind brand collapsed.
Blake Lively’s tone-deaf press tour backfired hard

In August 2024, Blake Lively promoted domestic violence film It Ends With Us in a lighthearted and breezy public manner. She named cocktails after the film’s abusive character and promoted her own product brand simultaneously.
A resurfaced 2016 interview clip of rude behavior toward a journalist also went very viral at the same time. Court documents confirmed her Betty Booze brand lost major retail partners because of the public backlash.
Doja Cat’s past came back at the worst moment

In May 2020, Doja Cat scored her first Billboard Hot 100 number one hit with Say So featuring Nicki Minaj. Almost immediately after, a 2015 song she recorded containing a racist slur was unearthed publicly.

James Corden faced consequences for restaurant behavior

In 2022, New York restaurateur Keith McNally publicly called out Late Late Show host James Corden directly on Instagram. He described Corden as possibly the most abusive customer his popular restaurant Balthazar had ever seen.

Joss Whedon’s workplace reputation unraveled publicly

Jimmy Fallon’s old SNL sketch resurfaced years later

In 2020, a year 2000 SNL sketch of Jimmy Fallon impersonating Chris Rock in blackface suddenly resurfaced online and spread. The hashtag JimmyFallonIsOverParty trended nationally on Twitter within hours of the clip being widely shared.
Fallon publicly called the decision terrible and offensive while Chris Rock defended him and helped cool things down quickly. In 2023, separate fresh reports of a tense Tonight Show work environment complicated his public image.
Colleen Ballinger’s Ukulele apology made things worse

In June 2023, Miranda Sings creator Colleen Ballinger faced serious allegations from former fans about inappropriate grooming behavior. Her response was a ukulele video titled hi. posted on YouTube that dismissed all their concerns entirely.
