Hollywood has always run on clear tough choices. Every major role someone accepts means another famous star said no first. These quiet decisions often reshape entire careers in ways nobody could ever predict or see.
Some of cinema’s most iconic performances almost went to completely different people. Stars who turned down big roles simply watched from the sidelines as someone else stepped in and claimed all the glory and fame.
Will Smith passed on Neo in The Matrix
In 1997 the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the highly coveted lead role of Neo in The Matrix. Smith simply could not understand the unusual pitch and chose Wild Wild West over that now legendary film.
Keanu Reeves stepped in and delivered what many fans consider the most iconic sci-fi performance ever made on screen. Smith later admitted on YouTube that he probably would have completely ruined that legendary classic film.
Emily Blunt missed out on Black Widow
Emily Blunt was Marvel Studios’ very first choice to play Natasha Romanoff in the 2010 blockbuster Iron Man 2. A prior contractual obligation to Fox then forced her into Gulliver’s Travels instead of that role.
Scarlett Johansson stepped in and went on to portray Black Widow across more than ten very major Marvel films. Blunt told Howard Stern the missed opportunity was genuinely heartbreaking because she truly had wanted it.
Kate Hudson turned down The Devil Wears Prada
Kate Hudson was offered the lead role of Andy Sachs in the 2006 blockbuster hit The Devil Wears Prada. Scheduling conflicts got in the way and she has since called it a really bad call.
Anne Hathaway took the role and earned enormous critical praise working right alongside the iconic and legendary Meryl Streep. Hudson told Capital FM she regrets not rearranging her busy schedule to appear in the movie.
John Travolta said no to Forrest Gump
John Travolta was the original first choice to play Forrest Gump long before Tom Hanks eventually landed the beloved role. He turned down the offer so he could star in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction instead.
Tom Hanks won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Forrest Gump at the big 1995 Oscar ceremony. Travolta later called turning it down a tremendous mistake even though Pulp Fiction also revived his career.
Channing Tatum was too scared for Blue Valentine
Director Derek Cianfrance personally wanted Channing Tatum to star in his deeply emotional 2010 romantic drama Blue Valentine. Tatum admitted at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival that he was absolutely terrified of the role.
Ryan Gosling took over and delivered one of the most emotionally raw performances of his entire acting career. Tatum later said he probably blocked out the memory because on some deep level he regrets it.
Joaquin Phoenix passed on Doctor Strange
Joaquin Phoenix entered formal talks with Marvel Studios in 2014 about playing the title role of Doctor Strange. He later commented briefly on the failed discussions in a 2018 interview saying all parties were satisfied.
Benedict Cumberbatch was cast and the role quickly transformed him into a globally celebrated major franchise movie star. Phoenix went on to win an Oscar for the Joker so his own career still thrived greatly.
Drew Barrymore chose to be killed off in Scream
Drew Barrymore was set to lead the 1996 horror film Scream but chose to be killed off early instead. She believed that shocking the audience so early in the story would serve the film better.
Neve Campbell stepped in as Sidney Prescott and became one of horror cinema’s most celebrated and enduring icons. Barrymore confirmed the story herself on the Hot Ones show calling it a fully deliberate creative choice.
Rachel McAdams refused The Devil Wears Prada three times
Director David Frankel told Entertainment Weekly that Rachel McAdams was offered the role of Andy Sachs three separate times. Coming off both Mean Girls and The Notebook she simply did not want another mainstream film.
The studio kept pushing hard but McAdams refused every offer and eventually opened the door for Anne Hathaway. Frankel noted the studio was completely determined to cast her while McAdams was equally determined not to.
Brian Cox turned down Game of Thrones
Before Brian Cox became globally famous through Succession, HBO offered him the part of King Robert Baratheon in Game of Thrones. Cox wrote about this amusingly in his memoir Putting the Rabbit in the Hat.
Mark Addy took the role and featured throughout the celebrated first season of the popular HBO series. Cox later rose to global fame through Succession proving that missing out on Westeros cost him absolutely nothing.
Jack Nicholson refused The Godfather
Jack Nicholson was offered the role of Michael Corleone in Coppola’s legendary 1972 film The Godfather. He explained to Movieline in 2004 that he believed Italian roles should rightfully and always go to Italian actors.
Al Pacino accepted the role and built one of the most celebrated acting legacies in all of Hollywood history. Nicholson said he has no regrets and still genuinely believes his personal decision was completely right.
