Fame is a fragile thing. Some stars build it over decades, only to shatter it in one reckless moment. Hollywood has seen talent, money, and global adoration vanish overnight because of poor choices.
These stars had it all: loyal fans, huge paychecks, and exceptional talent. Yet, none of it could shield them from their own inner battles. Despite their success, they struggled to overcome the challenges within themselves.
Will Smith, the slap that shook Hollywood
On March 27, 2022, Will Smith walked onstage at the 94th Academy Awards and slapped comedian Chris Rock. Rock had made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, a result of her alopecia diagnosis. The moment stunned the entire world.
Smith had just won the Best Actor Oscar for King Richard that same night. Instead of celebrating, he was banned from the Academy and all its events for ten years. Experts estimated he lost nearly one billion dollars in career opportunities.
Kanye West, words that cost a fortune
In October 2022, rapper Kanye West posted antisemitic remarks online and wore a shirt with the phrase “White Lives Matter” at his Paris Fashion Week show. He later went further, publicly expressing admiration for Adolf Hitler in a December 2022 interview. The backlash was immediate and severe.
Adidas dropped him, warning investors the split would cost the company roughly 250 million euros in lost revenue for 2022 alone. Balenciaga and talent agency CAA also cut all ties with him. Forbes revised his personal net worth downward by approximately 1.5 billion dollars almost overnight.
Ezra Miller, a superhero off the rails
Ezra Miller starred as the Flash in the DC Extended Universe and had been set for a massive solo film. In 2022, they were arrested multiple times in Hawaii for disorderly conduct and second-degree assault. Miller was also charged with felony burglary in Vermont that same year.
The Flash was released in June 2023 and posted a theatrical loss of around 200 million dollars. Miller’s absence from the promotional campaign reportedly cost the film between 80 and 120 million dollars in media value. Their Hollywood career has been largely idle since then.
Shia LaBeouf, talent buried under trouble
Shia LaBeouf rose from Disney’s Even Stevens to leading blockbuster franchises like Transformers and Indiana Jones. He had real talent and genuine critical praise. But a pattern of arrests, public outbursts, and personal chaos slowly eroded his standing.
In 2020, singer FKA Twigs sued him for sexual battery, assault, and emotional distress. LaBeouf publicly admitted he had been abusive and harmful to people around him. Olivia Wilde later replaced him on Don’t Worry Darling to protect the safety of the cast.
James Franco, from Golden Globe to career freeze
James Franco won a Golden Globe for The Disaster Artist in 2017. His career was riding high with critical praise and prestige projects lined up. Then multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct and exploitation at his acting school in 2018.
In 2019, several former students sued him for inappropriate and sexually charged behavior. The case was eventually settled out of court. Franco later admitted to having sex with students but claimed sex addiction had blinded him to the power dynamics at play.
Jussie Smollett, a lie that burned everything down
Jussie Smollett was a popular actor on the hit Fox drama Empire when he reported in January 2019 that two men attacked him in Chicago in a hate crime. Police investigated and concluded he had allegedly staged the attack himself. Fox wrote his character off the show entirely, and his Hollywood reputation collapsed fast.
In December 2021, a jury found him guilty on five counts of felony disorderly conduct for filing a false police report. However, in November 2024, the Illinois Supreme Court overturned that conviction. The court ruled his rights were violated because prosecutors had already dropped the original charges in exchange for community service.
Gina Carano, a post that ended it all
Gina Carano was a standout in The Mandalorian, playing fan-favorite character Cara Dune. In February 2021, she posted content on social media that compared being a Republican to being Jewish during the Holocaust. The reaction from fans and Disney was swift and decisive.
Lucasfilm fired her almost immediately and dropped her from the show. Her talent agency also dropped her as a client shortly after. The post ended what had been a genuinely promising career in mainstream Hollywood.
Jonathan Majors, Marvel’s biggest gamble gone wrong
Jonathan Majors was Marvel’s chosen villain for its next chapter after Thanos. He played Kang the Conqueror across Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and had an entire Avengers film built around him. His talent was undeniable and his future looked enormous.
In March 2023, Majors was arrested in New York on assault and harassment charges involving his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. A jury found him guilty in December 2023 on one count of third-degree assault and one count of second-degree harassment. Marvel dropped him within hours of the verdict and rewrote its entire Multiverse Saga without him.
Armie Hammer, the social media fallout
Armie Hammer was a rising Hollywood leading man with roles in Call Me by Your Name and The Social Network. In early 2021, disturbing private messages allegedly sent by Hammer began circulating on social media. The messages described graphic and violent content that shocked the public and industry alike.
He was dropped from multiple projects almost immediately, including a Jennifer Lopez film and a Broadway play. His talent agency WME parted ways with him. A three-part documentary called House of Hammer aired on Discovery Plus in September 2022 and brought further public scrutiny his way.
Chrissy Teigen, when the past comes back
Chrissy Teigen was one of the most popular media personalities in America with a massive following and major brand partnerships. In 2021, reality TV personality Courtney Stodden publicly shared direct messages that Teigen had allegedly sent encouraging them to harm themselves. Teigen issued a public apology after her first response failed to satisfy those involved.
More celebrities then came forward with their own negative experiences involving Teigen. Several major companies cut ties with her cooking brand, Cravings, as a result. The scandal served as a stark reminder that the internet never truly forgets anything.
