Beyonce’s 2023 Renaissance World Tour grossed $579 million across 56 shows and drew 2.7 million fans. It became the highest-grossing tour ever by a female artist and the highest-grossing tour ever by a Black artist.

No one in the stadium sat still. Fans showed up dressed in silver, treating each show like a full-scale fashion event. Beyonce did not just perform. She created a movement that had economists tracking spending in host cities.

At just 18, Billie Eilish swept all four major Grammy categories in one night in 2020. She became the youngest artist and the first woman ever to win Record, Song, Album, and Best New Artist in a single ceremony.

She went on to win two Academy Awards for Best Original Song. The first was for “No Time to Die” in 2022 and the second was for “What Was I Made For” in 2024. She became the youngest person ever to win two Oscars in any category.

On March 27, 2022, Will Smith walked onto the Oscars stage during the live broadcast and slapped comedian Chris Rock. Rock had made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, which was a result of her alopecia diagnosis.

Minutes after the slap, Smith returned to his seat and won Best Actor for King Richard. The Academy later banned him from all events for ten years. No moment in recent awards history has been debated more widely or more intensely.

Elon Musk completed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter on October 28, 2022. Within days, he fired top executives and laid off roughly half of the company’s 7,500 employees through a mass email notification.

He later rebranded the entire platform as X. Critics and celebrities flooded the internet with reactions. Musk became the most talked-about tech figure on the very platform he now owned. The chaos was impossible to look away from.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour became the first concert tour in history to gross over one billion dollars. The tour ran from 2023 into 2024 and shattered attendance and revenue records in nearly every country it visited.

She also rerecorded six of her original albums after losing ownership of her masters. Each release sent her back to number one. She dominated charts, cultural conversations, and stadium parking lots simultaneously. No one else was even close.

Sabrina Carpenter, the pop star summer could not contain

Sabrina Carpenter released “Espresso” on April 11, 2024, and it became the most-streamed song on both Spotify and Apple Music by the end of that year. It also topped Billboard’s Global Song of the Summer chart.

At one point she held three simultaneous top ten songs on the Billboard Hot 100. She was the first solo female artist to achieve that run of eight straight weeks. She went from opening act on the Eras Tour to owning 2024 all by herself.

Kendrick Lamar, the rapper who won the culture

Kendrick Lamar dropped four diss tracks in roughly 72 hours during his 2024 battle with Drake. His track “Not Like Us” went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and swept five Grammy Awards at the 2025 ceremony.

He then performed the song during the Super Bowl halftime show in 2025 in front of millions of viewers. He did not just win a beef. He turned it into a cultural landmark that reminded the world why rap music matters.

Doja Cat, the internet’s favorite chameleon

Doja Cat built her entire brand on unpredictability. She went from a viral novelty act with “Mooo!” in 2018 to a multi-Grammy winning artist with her album Planet Her in 2021 to a full artistic reinvention with Scarlet in 2023.

Her Scarlet era featured shaved eyebrows, a hip-hop-oriented sound, and a reputation for going viral simply by existing online. She publicly told fans she did not want them calling themselves her fans and the internet melted down. She pivots without warning and the world always follows.

Olivia Rodrigo, the teenager who made adults feel everything

Olivia Rodrigo released “Drivers License” in January 2021 and it broke Spotify’s overall record for most streams in a single week at the time. It spent eight weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Her debut album Sour won Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2022 Grammys. She was 19 years old. Her second album Guts debuted at number one in 2023. She wrote real, raw, emotionally specific songs and an entire generation recognized themselves in every lyric.

Chappell Roan, the reluctant star who became unavoidable

Chappell Roan released her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess in 2023. It gained slow momentum and then exploded in 2024 after her Coachella performance introduced her to millions of new fans worldwide.

Her song “Good Luck Babe!” peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2024. Billboard named her the No. 1 Top New Artist of the year. She was also famously outspoken about parasocial relationships and the real cost of sudden fame.
