Justin Bieber went from mugshot to megastar twice over
Justin Bieber was arrested in Miami in January 2014 and charged with DUI and drag racing. He was 19 at the time. His behavior during that period led many to declare his career permanently finished.
Purpose debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2015 with 649,000 units its first week. Three singles hit number one on the Hot 100. He won his first Grammy for Best Dance Recording.
Travis Scott lost everything at Astroworld and got it back
Travis Scott headlined the third Astroworld Festival in Houston Texas on November 5 2021. A crowd crush during the set resulted in 10 deaths. Hundreds of other concertgoers were badly injured during that same night.
A Harris County grand jury declined to indict Scott or anyone else in June 2023. He released Utopia in July 2023 to strong commercial success. Both the music industry and Hollywood welcomed him back quickly.
Morgan Wallen used a slur and became more famous anyway
TMZ published a video in February 2021 of Morgan Wallen using a racial slur outside his Nashville home. His label Big Loud Records suspended him indefinitely. Major radio stations pulled his songs from rotation nationwide.
Despite the industry backlash, Dangerous sales spiked 1220 percent the day after the video surfaced. It remained the most consumed album of 2021 across all genres. Country music forgave Wallen faster than almost anyone expected.
Lindsay Lohan turned a career collapse into a Netflix comeback
Lindsay Lohan starred in Freaky Friday in 2003 and Mean Girls in 2004 before multiple DUI arrests damaged her public reputation. A 2011 shoplifting conviction led to a jail sentence and mandatory community service hours.
She served 14 days of a 90-day sentence. Netflix gave her a second chance with Irish Wish in 2024 and greenlit a Freaky Friday sequel. She welcomed her first child with Bader Shammas in 2023.
Chris Brown kept his career despite a felony conviction
Chris Brown pleaded guilty in June 2009 to felony assault of Rihanna following an incident just before the Grammy Awards. He received five years probation and mandatory community service hours for the resulting criminal conviction.
Despite the conviction, Brown continued receiving radio airplay, chart-topping hits, and Grammy nominations. His 2012 album Fortune debuted at number one in the United States. The music industry never fully let him go after that.
Robert Downey Jr. went from prison to the Oscars
Robert Downey Jr. was arrested multiple times for drug-related offenses throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. He served one full year at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility following his 1999 cocaine possession conviction.
He got sober and landed Tony Stark in Iron Man in 2008. The film grossed 585 million dollars globally and launched the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. He won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2024.
Mel Gibson was blacklisted and then Oscar-nominated anyway
Mel Gibson was arrested for drunk driving in Malibu in July 2006 and made antisemitic remarks to the arresting officers. Audio recordings of racist and abusive private phone calls were then leaked publicly in 2010.
Hollywood largely shunned him for nearly a decade before Hacksaw Ridge in 2016 earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Director. He has since continued to act and produce in major Hollywood projects quite consistently.
Winona Ryder shoplifted her way out of Hollywood and back in
Winona Ryder was arrested for shoplifting merchandise worth approximately 5500 dollars from a Beverly Hills Saks Fifth Avenue store in December 2001. She was later convicted of grand theft and vandalism in California in 2002.
She was sentenced to three years of supervised probation and fined 2700 dollars. Her career recovered with Black Swan in 2010. Her casting as Joyce Byers in Stranger Things in 2016 fully cemented her return.
Zac Efron rebuilt his reputation after admitting to addiction
Zac Efron checked into rehab twice in 2013 for cocaine and alcohol addiction. He confirmed his struggle in a Hollywood Reporter interview in 2014 saying he had been drinking way too much during that period.
He returned to Hollywood with Neighbors in 2014 opposite Seth Rogen which grossed 268 million dollars globally. Studios trusted him again almost immediately. He has spoken openly about his recovery as an inspiration to others.
Matthew McConaughey said no to millions and won an Oscar
Matthew McConaughey spent the 2000s typecast as a shirtless rom-com star in films like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. He turned down a 14.5 million dollar rom-com offer to escape that cycle.
He took a 20-month hiatus and received no offers for 14 months after returning. He then starred in Dallas Buyers Club in 2013 and won the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 86th Oscars.
