8 Popular Foods Many Famous People Refuse to Eat

Celebrity diets have always fascinated people, and not just because of what stars choose to eat. What they refuse is often more revealing. Some avoid certain foods for health reasons, others for ethics, and a few have aversions so specific and stubborn that they’ve become part of the celebrity’s public identity.

From former presidents to chart-topping musicians, the list of famous food refusals is longer and stranger than most people expect.

1. Oprah Winfrey and Chewing Gum

Oprah Winfrey has been open about her deep dislike of chewing gum, and her reasoning goes back to childhood.

She has described watching her grandmother stick used pieces of gum on cabinet doors and bedposts, lining them up to save for later, in a way that apparently left a lasting impression. She reportedly bans it from her offices entirely. For someone who has built a brand around food culture, it’s a surprisingly firm line.

2. Tom Brady and Strawberries

Tom Brady has never eaten a strawberry in his life and told New York Magazine he has no desire to change that. The reason goes back to childhood in California, where an aunt would stop at roadside fruit stands and fill the family refrigerator with large trays of them.

The smell that followed when the door opened was enough to put him off permanently. He confirmed the same to NPR years later, and while Stephen Colbert somehow talked him into eating one on The Late Show in 2018, Brady described the experience as deeply unpleasant and clearly not a turning point.

3. Michelle Obama and Beets

Michelle Obama has been candid about her dislike of beets for years, which is notable given how publicly she championed vegetable consumption during her time in the White House. In a Food & Wine interview, she stated plainly that she is simply not a fan.

The aversion was visible as early as 2009, when beets were left out of the 55-variety White House kitchen garden entirely. Her husband Barack shares the same position, and both have attributed it to what they jokingly called “the beet gene.”

4. Julia Child and Cilantro

Julia Child famously could not stand cilantro, and she was never shy about saying so. In a well-known interview, she said she would pick it off her plate and throw it on the floor if she spotted it. Her description was that it had a “dead taste.”

Child is one of the most cited examples of a confirmed cilantro aversion, which researchers have since linked to a variation in olfactory receptor genes that causes the herb to register as soapy or unpleasant. The genetic quirk affects somewhere between three and twenty percent of people depending on ancestry, which means Child had science on her side even if she never knew it.

5. Mariah Carey and Most Foods, Apparently

Mariah Carey’s dietary restrictions have been reported extensively, and they point to someone with an extremely narrow range of accepted foods. She told E! News that her diet consists entirely of Norwegian salmon and capers, and when the host pushed back, she confirmed she was serious.

Whether this is a strict protocol or performance is debatable, but the interview exists and she held firm. For a singer who requires elaborate production arrangements on tour, the idea that her food requirements are equally specific is at least consistent with everything else on record.

6. Jennifer Aniston and Caviar

Jennifer Aniston has no interest in caviar and has said so directly. In an interview with Yahoo Food, she stated that no matter how many people insist it is an acquired taste, she has not acquired it and does not intend to. Her description of it was blunt enough that it left little room for interpretation.

Aniston’s food preferences run toward the straightforward, and caviar sits at the opposite end of that spectrum in texture, smell, and social expectation.

7. Barack Obama and Beets

Barack Obama’s dislike of beets predates the White House. The Associated Press reported in 2008 that his response to the vegetable was a flat “I always avoid eating them.” The aversion became quietly symbolic when the White House kitchen garden was planted the following year and beets were conspicuously absent.

In 2025, Michelle Obama brought it up again on her podcast, noting that Barack “is not a beet gene person,” which she described as one of the reasons she married him. For a former president who otherwise maintained a notably disciplined diet, the beet stance is oddly specific and deeply consistent.

8. Dwayne Johnson and Salmon

Dwayne Johnson hates salmon. This is remarkable because salmon appears regularly in his diet, particularly when he is training intensively for a role. He told Delish that he hates it but eats it anyway because it is good for his health and fitness.

The discipline required to eat a food you actively dislike, multiple times a day, across weeks of preparation, is either admirable or unsettling depending on how you look at it. Johnson’s cheat meals have become their own genre of social media content, and the contrast with the salmon-heavy training diet makes the whole operation feel like a study in extreme self-control.

Oprah’s Rule Extends Further Than Most People Realize

The gum ban at Oprah’s offices is well-documented, but the scope of her reaction goes further. She has described bumping into old pieces of gum stuck around her grandmother’s home as a child, and the physical sensation of that contact is what solidified the aversion.

She told Stephen Colbert that when she encounters gum chewing in public, it genuinely creeps her out, and that she would ban it everywhere if she had the power to do so. Her co-star Reese Witherspoon found out firsthand on the set of A Wrinkle in Time, offering Oprah a piece of green gum while cheerfully chewing her own. Oprah was not pleased. Witherspoon’s response was that nobody had given her the Oprah rules.
