Hollywood has always rewarded talent, but the biggest power moves rarely happen on screen. Real influence comes from owning what you create. Some celebrities figured that out and built studios, companies, and brands from scratch.
None of them asked for a job title. They created their own lane and dared Hollywood to keep up. These ten celebrities prove the most powerful people in the room are often the ones nobody officially hired.
Reese Witherspoon, she became the studio

Reese Witherspoon founded Hello Sunshine in 2016 after years of self-funding projects Hollywood refused to greenlight. She started with a book club and a belief that women-led stories could earn serious money at the highest level.
Big Little Lies won multiple Emmy Awards in 2017 and proved her instincts right. The Morning Show on Apple TV Plus followed. In 2021, she sold Hello Sunshine to Candle Media for a reported 900 million dollars.
Ryan Reynolds, the accidental mogul

Ryan Reynolds co-wrote and produced Deadpool in 2016 after nearly a decade fighting to get it made. The film cost 58 million dollars and grossed over 782 million worldwide, the highest-grossing R-rated film in history at the time.
He launched Maximum Effort in 2018, a production company that reshaped celebrity brand building. Aviation Gin sold to Diageo for 610 million dollars in 2020. Mint Mobile was then acquired by T-Mobile for 1.35 billion dollars in 2023.
Tyler Perry, he built his own Hollywood

Tyler Perry purchased 330 acres of the former Fort McPherson Army base in Atlanta in 2015 for 30 million dollars. His grand opening gala in October 2019 drew Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, and the Clintons.
Tyler Perry Studios now has 12 sound stages and over 200 acres of usable sets. It is one of the largest studios in America. Perry became the first African American to outright own a major film studio.
Jay-Z, the blueprint for a new kind of power

Jay-Z served as president and CEO of Def Jam Recordings from 2004 to 2007. During that time he helped launch the careers of Kanye West, Rihanna, and Ne-Yo on a global scale.
He founded Roc Nation in 2008 covering music, sports, and film. In 2019, Roc Nation signed a deal with the NFL to oversee every Super Bowl Halftime Show. Forbes named Jay-Z the first hip-hop billionaire that year.
Oprah Winfrey, she named a network after herself

Oprah Winfrey founded Harpo Productions in 1986 and became the first Black woman to own a major production studio. The name Harpo is Oprah spelled backward and the name of her character’s husband in The Color Purple.
She launched the Oprah Winfrey Network on January 1, 2011, with Discovery Communications. The Hollywood Reporter named her the most powerful woman in entertainment in 2008. She became the world’s first Black female billionaire in 2003.
George Clooney, from actor to billion-dollar brand

George Clooney co-founded Casamigos Tequila in 2013 with friends Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman while building vacation homes in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. They created it purely for personal use with no plans to sell it.
Diageo acquired Casamigos in June 2017 for 700 million dollars upfront with up to 300 million more tied to performance. The deal made Clooney the highest-paid entertainer in 2018, earning more from tequila than from films.
Beyonce, building a business with every album

Beyonce founded Parkwood Entertainment in 2008 as a production unit for films and videos. It has since become the creative engine powering every major album, tour, and cultural project she has released to the public.
Her 2023 Renaissance World Tour earned 579 million dollars, the highest-grossing solo female tour ever. She has won 32 Grammy Awards, more than any artist ever. Her business moves now match the full cultural weight of her music.
LeBron James, from Springfield to Hollywood power

LeBron James co-founded SpringHill Entertainment in 2007 with his business partner Maverick Carter. The company has grown far beyond basketball into a full media and entertainment enterprise with major deals across streaming and film.
SpringHill raised 725 million dollars in investment in 2021 and produced the Netflix series Starting 5 and the film Space Jam: A New Legacy. James co-owns Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool FC.
Will Smith, outlasted every Hollywood trend

Will Smith co-founded Overbrook Entertainment in 1997 with producer James Lassiter. The company gave him creative control over his projects during one of the most commercially successful stretches any actor has ever achieved in Hollywood.
Overbrook produced Ali in 2001, The Pursuit of Happyness in 2006, and I Am Legend in 2007. All three were major cultural touchstones. Smith built a producing legacy solid enough to outlast every controversy his career has faced.
Kim Kardashian, quietly became the business

Kim Kardashian launched KKW Beauty in 2017 and sold a 20 percent stake to Coty Inc. in 2020 for 200 million dollars. That deal valued the brand at one billion dollars. Forbes named her a billionaire in 2021.
She launched Skims in 2019, which hit a four billion dollar valuation by 2023. She co-founded Skky Partners, a private equity firm, in 2022. Without a film or record deal, she became one of Hollywood’s most powerful forces.
