Hollywood casting is never as simple as it looks. Behind every iconic role is a story of auditions, rejections, and unexpected twists. Some of the most beloved characters almost belonged to completely different faces.
The actors we now associate with legendary roles often walked into audition rooms chasing something else entirely. What happens next is pure Hollywood magic. Fate, talent, and sharp casting directors changed everything.
Tom Hiddleston wanted to be Thor
Before Tom Hiddleston became Marvel’s most beloved villain, he spent three months auditioning for Thor. He wore a blond wig, wielded a hammer, and gave it everything he had. The role ultimately went to Chris Hemsworth.
Director Kenneth Branagh spotted something mischievous in Hiddleston during those Thor auditions. He offered Hiddleston the role of Loki without a separate audition. Today, nobody can imagine Marvel without that iconic God of Mischief.
Chadwick Boseman tried out for Drax
Before he became the King of Wakanda, Chadwick Boseman auditioned for Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy. He played the character with regal dignity, which felt completely wrong for Drax. Dave Bautista ultimately landed that role instead.
Casting director Sarah Finn noticed something special in Boseman’s audition. She kept him in mind for future Marvel projects. Years later, that same dignity made him a perfect Black Panther.
Amanda Seyfried came in as Regina George
Amanda Seyfried flew to Los Angeles to audition for Regina George in Mean Girls. She gave what she called a “psychotic” take on the queen bee role. Rachel McAdams was later chosen to play the iconic villain instead.
Producer Lorne Michaels suggested Seyfried could be Karen Smith. She accepted the offer and developed Karen’s signature whispery voice herself. That “dumb blonde” role became one of cinema’s most beloved comedy characters.
Sandra Oh demanded a different role
Sandra Oh originally walked into the Grey’s Anatomy auditions for the role of Miranda Bailey. After reading the scripts, she told creator Shonda Rhimes she wanted Cristina Yang instead. Rhimes listened and the rest became television history.
Chandra Wilson was later cast as the brilliant Bailey. Oh went on to play Cristina for ten seasons. She won a Golden Globe for a role she had to fight to even audition for.
Iwan Rheon almost became Jon Snow
Welsh actor Iwan Rheon was one of the final two contenders for Jon Snow in Game of Thrones. The role came down to him and Kit Harington. Harington won, and Rheon later admitted the producers made the right call.
The showrunners remembered Rheon and brought him back to play Ramsay Bolton. He ended up becoming one of the most hated villains in television history. Jon Snow and his greatest enemy were almost the same person.
Jennifer Aniston said no to Saturday Night Live
Before Friends made her a global icon, Jennifer Aniston was offered a spot on Saturday Night Live. She turned down SNL creator Lorne Michaels directly, citing concerns about how women were treated on the show. It was a bold move for an actress who had not yet had a major hit.
Adam Sandler, already an SNL cast member at the time, was shocked she declined. Aniston chose Friends instead and never looked back. She later hosted SNL twice and called the experience something she loves.
Tom Felton tried for Harry and Ron
Tom Felton originally auditioned for the lead roles of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. He did not get either part. He was eventually cast as the blond and sneering Draco Malfoy instead.
Felton has publicly said he is grateful for that outcome. He openly admits he does not believe anyone could have matched what Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint brought to those roles. Draco became one of the franchise’s most memorable characters because of Felton’s sharp performance.
Paul Wesley switched brothers on The Vampire Diaries
Paul Wesley first auditioned for Damon Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries because producers felt he was too old to play Stefan. After multiple auditions, the network even suggested making him Damon over Ian Somerhalder. Showrunner Julie Plec pushed back hard and called that idea a “terrible idea.”
Producers eventually came around and gave Wesley the role of Stefan instead. He auditioned roughly fifteen times before landing it. The two actors became one of TV’s most iconic brother duos.
Lee Pace wanted to play Star-Lord
Lee Pace auditioned for the lead role of Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2012. He was excited about playing the charming, sarcastic Star-Lord. Chris Pratt ultimately won that part and became a household name because of it.
Marvel saw something different in Pace and cast him as villain Ronan the Accuser instead. He had also recently played the regal Thranduil in The Hobbit films. Critics praised how effortlessly he moved between such completely opposite characters.
Cillian Murphy almost wore the Batsuit
Cillian Murphy auditioned for the lead role of Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins. He went far enough in the process to try on Val Kilmer’s old Batsuit and perform two full scenes. Murphy later said it was clear to him from the start that he was not Batman material.
Director Christopher Nolan used those screen tests to convince studio executives to cast Murphy as Scarecrow. Nolan told executives: once they saw Murphy perform, there was no dissent. Murphy turned that secondary villain into one of the most chilling performances in the entire Dark Knight trilogy.
