Not every single celebrity loves the spotlight forever. Some of the world biggest stars have willingly walked away from their fame on purpose. They chose quiet lives and happiness over red carpets and public attention.

Fame can feel like a trap. The pressure of constant public scrutiny takes a real toll on mental and personal life. These stars proved stepping back from the spotlight can be the boldest move possible.

Cameron Diaz stepped away from Hollywood in 2014 after her final film Annie. She chose family over movie sets and married musician Benji Madden in 2015. They now live a private life together in Montecito.

At Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit in 2024, Diaz said she needed to reclaim her life. She welcomed daughter Raddix in 2019 and son Cardinal in 2024. Family became her greatest and most personal priority.

Adele wrapped her Las Vegas residency in November 2024 and stepped away from public life. The 16-time Grammy winner told fans she needed rest. She said she had spent seven years building a new life.

Sources say Adele has been living quietly in Beverly Hills ever since her final show in 2024. She is reportedly studying English Literature online. She has been spotted in public only a handful of times.

Daniel Day-Lewis, the actor who walked away

Daniel Day-Lewis shocked Hollywood in 2017 by retiring after his film Phantom Thread. The three-time Oscar winner said the feeling of stopping had simply settled on him. He later apprenticed as a shoemaker in Italy.

He returned to the screen for his son Ronan’s directorial debut Anemone released in 2025. Day-Lewis co-wrote the script with Ronan. He later said he never truly intended a permanent and complete retirement from acting.

Enya has sold an estimated 80 million records worldwide yet almost never appears in public. Ireland’s best-selling solo artist has never performed a solo concert tour. She lives in seclusion inside a castle near Dublin.

She rarely gives interviews and has no social media presence at all. Her last studio album Dark Sky Island came out in 2015. She once said the music sells itself and not her public persona.

The Olsen Twins: Designers Not Performers

The Olsen twins retired from acting in 2012 and co-founded their luxury fashion label The Row. They almost never give interviews about their personal lives. Mary-Kate said they were simply raised to be discreet people.

The twins were last photographed together in Paris in November 2024 near Place Vendome. Ashley secretly welcomed her first child with husband Louis Eisner. They have built one of America’s most respected high-end fashion labels.

Jack Gleeson, fame was never the goal

Jack Gleeson played King Joffrey on Game of Thrones from 2011 to 2014. Despite massive global success he walked away from acting once it concluded. He returned to university studies and theatre work in Ireland.

Dave Chappelle, walked away at the peak

Dave Chappelle walked away from a reported 50 million dollar deal for Chappelle’s Show in 2005. He moved to Yellow Springs, Ohio to escape intense fame. He said the industry felt spiritually destructive to him.

Chappelle took years away from public life to rest and reset. He returned to stand-up comedy on his own terms. His story became a powerful reminder that mental health matters far more than any paycheck.

Jodie Foster, always guarded always grounded
