Few falls from grace have been as chaotic or as public as Ezra Miller’s. After earning strong notices for We Need to Talk About Kevin and building a fanbase through The Flash franchise, Miller’s behavior off-screen became impossible to ignore.
A series of arrests, allegations of harassment and grooming, and a restraining order filed in Hawaii dominated headlines through 2022 and into the years that followed. Warner Bros. kept The Flash in production largely due to sunk costs, but the film underperformed at the box office in 2023, and Miller’s future in major studio projects has remained genuinely uncertain.
2. Will Smith
The Oscars slap of March 2022 rewrote Will Smith’s public story overnight. For more than two decades, he had been one of the most carefully managed, universally liked stars in the business. That image cracked in real time on live television when he walked onstage and struck presenter Chris Rock.
The Academy banned him from attending for ten years. Projects were quietly shelved. His 2023 film Emancipation received little awards attention and underperformed badly at the box office, and the goodwill that had sustained his career through lean box office years largely evaporated. He remains a polarizing figure.
3. Amber Heard
The televised defamation trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp in 2022 was one of the most-watched celebrity legal proceedings in years. The jury ruled largely in Depp’s favor, and the court of public opinion had already made its decision well before the verdict.
Heard’s film career effectively stalled following the trial. Her role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was significantly reduced, and she relocated to Madrid, Spain. Whatever public sympathy existed for her early in the proceedings had largely faded by the time the cameras switched off.
4. Joss Whedon
Joss Whedon spent years as something of a progressive hero in Hollywood, celebrated for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and credited with championing strong female characters.
That reputation collapsed under the weight of detailed allegations from multiple actors, including Ray Fisher and Gal Gadot. A New York magazine investigation published in January 2022 included accounts from dozens of former colleagues. Whedon has not directed a major project since.
5. Ellen DeGeneres
The “be kind” brand that Ellen DeGeneres built over nearly two decades on daytime television took serious damage when former staff members went public in 2020 with accounts of a toxic workplace. The stories described bullying, racial insensitivity, and a culture of fear behind the scenes.
Ratings dropped, advertisers grew nervous, and the goodwill that had made her one of the safest names in entertainment began to look shakier than anyone expected. Her show ended in 2022. The transition back to a fully positive public image has been slow.
6. Armie Hammer
Armie Hammer’s career was derailed by disturbing allegations that surfaced in early 2021 when leaked messages attributed to him went viral.
Hammer denied the allegations, but the reputational damage was severe. He was dropped by his agency and pulled from multiple projects. A documentary series, House of Hammer, revisited the story on Discovery+ in 2022, keeping it in public conversation at a time when he had otherwise gone quiet.
7. Kevin Spacey
Kevin Spacey was one of the most respected actors of his generation, a two-time Oscar winner with a reputation for total commitment to craft. The misconduct allegations that began with Anthony Rapp’s account in 2017 ended his career in conventional terms almost instantly.
He was written out of House of Cards and recast in All the Money in the World, with Christopher Plummer replacing him via reshoots weeks before the film’s release. Legal proceedings dragged on for years, and while he was acquitted in both a UK criminal trial and a US civil case, the professional damage proved permanent.
8. Kanye West
Kanye West’s public image had survived controversy before. His outbursts, feuds, and erratic interviews had often been absorbed into a larger narrative about genius and eccentricity.
The remarks he made publicly in late 2022 crossed a line that his fan base and his corporate partners were unwilling to absorb. Adidas terminated a partnership worth an estimated $1.5 billion. Gap and Balenciaga followed. His continued public statements through 2023 and 2024 left little ambiguity about whether the situation would repair itself.
9. Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp’s case occupies a different position on this list. His image collapsed publicly during the UK libel trial in 2020, when a judge ruled that a tabloid’s characterization of him as abusive was “substantially true.” He was asked to resign from the Fantastic Beasts franchise and seemed professionally finished.
Then the American defamation trial in 2022 shifted the narrative again. Many viewers saw him as the wronged party, and he experienced a degree of public rehabilitation unusual for someone who had faced such findings. The full picture is still contested, and probably will be for some time.
