Lady Gaga was dropped before she even got started

Lady Gaga, born Stefani Germanotta, signed with Def Jam Records at only 19 years old. The label dropped her just three months later. She later described that painful day as the worst of her life.

Instead of quitting, she performed in New York clubs and wrote hit songs for other well-known recording artists. Akon later convinced Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine to sign her directly. She never looked back after that.

Adam Driver was rejected by Juilliard before serving his country

Adam Driver first applied to the prestigious Juilliard School right after graduating high school and was rejected. He then enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served until a sternum injury resulted in his discharge.

After leaving the Marines, Driver reapplied to Juilliard and was finally accepted in 2005. He graduated in 2009 and waited tables while auditioning for roles. His HBO series Girls finally put him in the spotlight.

Viola Davis spent decades playing roles nobody noticed

Despite graduating from Juilliard and winning two Tony Awards on Broadway, Viola Davis spent many years in small roles that Hollywood quickly forgot. She appeared alongside big stars but was rarely given truly meaningful screen time.

The Help earned Davis her first Oscar nomination in 2011. How to Get Away with Murder made her a household name. In 2015, she became the first Black woman to win a Lead Drama Emmy.

Henry Cavill lost role after role before becoming Superman

Henry Cavill was originally cast in the 2004 film Superman Flyby, but the project was scrapped entirely. He also lost the James Bond role to Daniel Craig after being told he looked chubby on screen.

Twilight author Stephenie Meyer originally wanted Cavill as Edward Cullen, but ruled him too old for the teenage vampire role. After years of painful near misses, he became Superman in Man of Steel in 2013.

Paul Mescal was a total unknown before normal people

Paul Mescal graduated from The Lir Academy at Trinity College Dublin in 2017 and performed in small Dublin stage productions. He had zero screen credits and no major industry contacts to help him break through.

His 2020 role in Normal People launched him to worldwide fame. He then received an Oscar nomination for Aftersun in 2022. He starred as the lead in Ridley Scott’s blockbuster film Gladiator II in 2024.

Scarlett Johansson lost her first big opportunity at age 11

An 11-year-old Scarlett Johansson auditioned for a role in the 1995 Robin Williams film Jumanji. She lost the part to Kirsten Dunst. It was a difficult early setback for a determined and ambitious young actress.

Johansson refused to quit and landed a starring role in The Horse Whisperer in 1998. She went on to become one of Marvel’s biggest stars and one of the world’s highest-paid actresses at her peak.

Jon Hamm was rejected throughout his entire twenties

Jon Hamm spent his twenties being turned away by casting directors. He was told he looked too old for young roles but too young for older ones. At 29, he landed his first TV role.

Seven years later, he finally landed the iconic role of Don Draper in AMC’s Mad Men. The show debuted in 2007 and became one of TV history’s most celebrated dramas. He earned multiple Emmy nominations.

Kate Winslet was told to accept smaller, limited roles

Kate Winslet’s drama teacher told her to settle for fat girl roles if she wanted to work as an actress. That cruel comment could have ended her dreams before they even got off the ground.

Winslet completely ignored the teacher’s advice and starred in Titanic in 1997 alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. She became a global superstar overnight and later used her fame to call out Hollywood’s harmful body image standards publicly.

Chadwick Boseman was overlooked until Marvel changed everything

Chadwick Boseman quietly built his career through small TV roles and independent films before major studios truly took notice. He played Jackie Robinson in the acclaimed 2013 film 42, but remained below the top-star tier.

Marvel cast him as T’Challa in Black Panther, and the massive 2018 film grossed 1.34 billion dollars worldwide at the box office. Boseman became a true global cultural icon before his passing in August 2020.

Jennifer Aniston’s first TV show was canceled after ten episodes

Jennifer Aniston was cast in Muddling Through in 1994, but CBS canceled the show after just ten episodes. It was a frustrating early setback for a young actress trying to find her footing in Hollywood.

That same year, she was cast as Rachel Green in Friends. The hit sitcom ran for ten seasons and made her a global star. She remains one of Hollywood’s most recognized and beloved actresses today.
